Digital Post Production – Seeing Is Believing

During the early stages of the project I thought about what type of things use post production most and most effectively. After some research and looking into things I decided that advertisements used post production the most and this was the theme I was going to follow through out my project. I began looking at different advert that were of interest to me such as sorts adverts and ipod adverts to see how they sold their product / brand and they different styles they used. With the ipod adverts I became inspired by the silhouettes within the images and wanted to use this within my work. As I had decided I wanted to create an advert of some kind of promotional piece I thought it would be more meaningful if I could work with / for someone so I contacted Bar Risa & they wrote out a brief for me. I enjoyed working to a set live brief and with someone else such as a company but also felt a lot of pressure to get the final product right.
I found this project extremely challenging due to the fact it was based around Photoshop and I was not experienced with this software. Although we had two lessons practising this and learning the extreme basics I was disappointed that we weren’t taught more as it not an easy thing to use and felt that I was practically left to figure the software out on my own but also come up with three adequate final outcomes which I struggled with.
I also found the research side of this project hard as what I found there were two sides of the eighties, the bright neon fast moving side… and the old looking dark side with dull colours. So there was a total contradiction and I didn’t know which theme at first to go with. After doing more research and talking to the person who wrote my brief I went with the bright neon theme. I feel my research gave me a good insight into the era and this is shown within my final images that I have designed.
I feel that although my images are successful in portraying what I had being asked to do they don’t look as professional as I had hoped. I think my expectations of what I could achieve on photoshop were higher than what I was able to do but as I tried my best with it, the images I have ended up with I am proud of.
If I was to do this project again I would research more into maybe the 80’s rave culture to generate some more ideas and also experiment more with my own images. I would also request more help and lessons in photoshop as I thought that the two lessons I had in it didn’t teach me near enough what I needed to know to create a professional looking piece of work.

My Final 3 Images

I think i have been sucessful in designing a flyer that represents the 80's and fits to the brief i was given. overall i am pleased with the outcome of my work.

80's themed club posters

These posters were useful for me to look at as I decided the key aspects within these that I could take forward and use within my work:

•Bright colours
•Neon
•Circles
•Stars
•Horizontal lines
•Images

Icons Of The 80's

I looked at 80's icons to get an idea of the styles and fashion that was around at that time so I could feel influenced by this.

80's research - album covers 2

These two album covers offer a different view on the 80's style but again are similar in alot of ways such as a green back ground with graphic images, same colour palet, font styles and layout.
All album covers represent the 80's in some way and I have found it usefull loooking at these for my inspiration.

80's research - album covers

Alot of album covers such as these 2 in particular have alot in common and show aspects that were popular during the 80's such as the polka dots, colour theme, exagerated highlights and shadows and also font style.

Friday 16 May 2008

Although I didn’t like having a lot of text on the front I decided to try it again on a different background and in smaller sections so it would be easier to read rather than a big paragraph of text.
I think this works more for the back of a flyer, not the front or as a poster.

After I designed the previous layout I decided that it looked too much information and was not easy to read to get the key information that was needed to promote the night, so I erased the text I had before and replaced it with key points in an order that would draw the reader in step by step.

With this design I decided to include more information to draw the readers in and make them want to attend the night. I used the cocktail glass from my first design and included glowing stars and neon colours / text that were key in the 80’s.
I used:
•Paint bucket tool
•Shape tool
•Paint brush tool
•Text – Out glows & In glows

•This was the first flyers that I designed. I used the bright colours for the background incorporating the tie dye 80’s design and also placed the polka dots behind information to make it stand out.
I used:
•Magic wand tool
•Opacity tool
•Shape tool
•Filters
•Paint brush tool
•Text

With these designs (above & below) I incorporated the neon look that was popular within the 80’s. I kept the layout simple and included key information in the centre of the image. These 2 designs use the same background and layout but one has the colours inverted to offer a different colour scheme. I prefer the image on the bottom but if I use this as one of my final 3 images I will not include the dancers at the bottom.

This was the first layout I designed.
With this I just basically wanted to learn more about how to use the tool and filters and see what effects I could create.
I worked with the influence I got from the ipod adverts and made the glass look almost silhouette. I found experimenting with the tools useful as I learnt how to create different effects.
